Assumptions on the Migrants Homesickness Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Suspicions on the Migrants Homesickness - Essay Example The exposition Suspicions on the Migrant’s Homesickness talks about the migrant’s yearning to go home since the transients are to a great extent thought to be arranged towards their unique network and they stay dedicated to their own country, in any event, when the drawing monetary advantages from their host community.Denied to harbor any devoted rights, they are only sometimes observed as pioneers or top of the line residents. The confinement of such essentialist see is that it tries to diminish the plural idea of the migrant’s network and smooth out the heterogeneity into a solitary level look. This suspicion doesn't consider the estrangement felt by the vagrants concerning their unique countries since the sheer change in experience has unalterably transformed them and found them in no place specifically. The vagrants have an increasingly unpredictable reaction to their new countries. Relocation to a great extent happens inside the work class looking for a supe rior social, monetary and political condition. The host is henceforth incapable to envision the vagrant as a piece of the network and is compromised by their social contrasts. The vagrants are summed up as an aggregate mysterious social power who are â€Å"rootless, unattached, and brief residents†. This view over-streamlines the destitute state of the vagrant networks and their achiness to visit the family for their unique country. The â€Å"imagined† privileges of the transients are left unattended. They adhere to their own social limits to delete the psychological desolation of the diaspora.

Business Taxation. See uploaded guidlines Essay

Business Taxation. See transferred guidlines - Essay Example Innovative work (R&D) charge credits are an organization charge help which can either lessen a company’s charge bill or, for some little or medium measured organizations, give a money sum’. Through an alternate definition it is seen that ‘Research and advancement charge credits are an organization charge help which can either diminish a company’s charge bill or, for some little or medium measured organizations, give a money aggregate; the R&D charge credit works by permitting organizations to deduct up to 150% of qualifying use on R&D exercises while computing their benefit for charge purposes’ (The Small Business Portal, 2006). It ought to be seen that the above plan can prompt the advantages expressed above just if explicit terms and prerequisites are met (as it will be clarified beneath). The advantages offered by this plan to firms the nation over can be separated. Explicitly for private ventures it is seen by the UK HM Revenue and Customs that the specific plan can prompt a decrease of the expense bill up to a level of 15%. Then again, it is likewise bolstered that ‘some SME organizations not in benefit can give up their R&D charge misfortunes for money (as a payable credit) of up to 24p per  £1 of genuine consumption inside indicated categories’ (UK, HM Revenue and Customs, Small Businesses). The degree of the advantage can reach up to a 100% of capital remittances for little firms that make a significant capital consumption. So as to comprehend the advantages offered for private companies in UK under the specific plan it is important to allude principally to the meaning of R&D plot at any rate with respect to its general attributes. In this specific circumstance, it is seen that ‘broadly, so as to qualify, exercises must be imaginative or inventive work in the fields of science or innovation and embraced with a view to the expansion of information and kicking off something new, regardless of whether that be through settling some vulnerability or making another or considerably improved

How to Create Compare and Contrast Essay Outline

How to Create Compare and Contrast Essay Outline Do you know how your lovely pets can help you to pass a course assignment? No, there is nothing wrong with this statement. Your fed and pampered cat might be quite useful as well as your faithful dog. Do not consider your family’s pets as a distraction and creatures making a complete mess around. Let them inspire you for the most insightful compare and contrast essay outline! No more riddles, no more secrets. Without further ado, let us explain the easiest way to elaborate a comprehensive outline for your future masterpiece. Structure: What Do You Need to Write? We know that you are eager to start writing an essay, but not wade in unknown waters, scrutinize your topic first. You need to choose two subjects that vary widely or, on the contrary, are closely related. Think carefully about these objects, people, events, and places to distinguish the similarities or discern the major differences. Don’t be too hasty to write an introductory paragraph. Take your time to develop an outline for your essay. What is the reason for creating the plan in the first place? Imagine this: you have started writing but stuck in the middle of your thoughts! Or even worse, you have written the essay when noticed the gaps in a logical framework. To avoid burnout, you should follow a consistent outline that has its own structure. The Introductory paragraph. The Body (consists at least of three parts). The Conclusion paragraph. This holistic approach will enable you to put your ideas in an appropriate format. Make your outline simple for understanding, coherent and logical. Introduction to the Topic Now you are aware of the basic structure so that let us break down major components returning to our lovely four-legged beasts: cats and dogs. The introductory paragraph is the place to describe your topic in general and specific terms. As a rule, it starts with a hook to draw the reader into the writing paper. Your task is to introduce your topic with several sentences. Make clear what you are going to discuss. It consists of three significant elements. Discover the central topic. Usually, the introductory paragraph begins with a particular hook to induce reader’s interest. Rhetorical questions might be useful to lure your audience. After that, put the specifics of the topic. Example. Comparing and contrasting our pets, we might introduce the topic like this: “Do you know why cats are considered to be smarter than dogs?” Identify your objects. Specify what you are going to compare and contrast. Describe your objects to the readers shortly; emphasize the distinctive features as well as commonalities. Example. Returning to our pets, we might write the following lines: “Kitten, a charming small creature that likes to play all the time, contrasts sharply with our lazy Chesapeake Bay Retriever Ben that usually sleeps so sweetly near the fireplace. Despite their differences, both of them have the same soft spot for a piece of juicy meat”. Thesis statement. It is the final part of your introductory paragraph and the place to make your thesis statement. It is time to clarify the fundamental idea. It means you have to make your reader understand where your essay is going. Example. In our case, the thesis statement emphasized three specific features of the pets. “Firstly, Kitty and Ben differ in their nature, behavior, and preferences; yet they have a strong bond to human beings taking us for a mother, father, friend, and goddess, especially Ben.” Brainstorm the last sentence of the section, as it helps you transition smoothly into the next part. The Body of Your Story: Our Guide The amount of the body paragraphs depends on the aspects of your subject. Write two details about each of them separately, explaining how they are related to the facet. Paragraph #1 State the principal idea of the paragraph. We put it in this way: “The first difference between Kitten and Ben is the way they behave in human society; while both depend on their master, each of the pets has its personal style.” Our detail sentences might look in such way: Subject #1: Kitten 1. “Kitten thinks that the only purpose the world exists is to make her absolutely contented and satisfy all her royal whims. I think she considers herself to be an ancient goddess while all the members of our family are her subjects.” 2. “In the nastiest days, when everything seems going wrong, she possesses an admirably quality to make your shine! Whenever you came at home, Kitten is waiting for you, looking for your love, gentle strokes, and some meat.” Subject #2: Ben 1. “On the other hand, Ben is both the most faithful friend and the diligent servant that neither complains nor demands, and is always glad to help with your lost slipper or leftover bones.” 2. “Despite his native laziness and passion for the master’s pillow, whenever you want, Ben will come to make you cheer up: shake his strong and friendly paws.” In the same way, you should organize the next paragraphs: put the aspect first, and then go into details describing every point separately. There are no strict rules on how many elements you should compare. However, our piece of advice is to reflect on three or more key thoughts. Put particular attention to the last body paragraph. It wraps up the final aspect that you have identified in the thesis. More Writing Tips Make your introduction bright. You should capture the readers attention like Alexander the Great conquest the Persian Empire. Answer the questions. In this way, you will piece together the whole picture and clarify specific details. For instance, state something unknown and outline the possible misunderstanding. Reveal a new way of seeing or realizing something. Never forget to argue a point with supported facts. Read it critically. Come back to your essay with fresh eyes. Return to the reading a day after it was completing. Make sure each topic sentence of the body clearly summarizes the key points. Proofread it to recognize weak points and edit for grammar, logic, and flow. Juicy Conclusion: Make it Better! At last, we are ready to wrap all ideas up with the conclusion. It is the final chord comprising the short summary of our essay, which aims to put all things together. Remember three significant points: Summarize. You need to synthesize your ideas with the information set out in the body paragraphs. Focus on evaluation. Describe the greater meaning of the chosen topic or discuss possible progresses in the future. Answer the question of what the purpose of your work is. Significance. Underline revealed differences and explain why you consider them essential. State what was your final goal in showing these differences? By the way, you may refer back to your introductory paragraph and rewrite thesis statement. How to Choose a Topic? If you are free to choose, find something you are crazy about. Maybe you adore cats as we are? Then it will be easier to describe the subject! You may compare personalities, places, objects, animals, facts and so on. For example, you may write about: American and English language differences; Art and science class; Rock and classical music; Tea and coffee or apple and tomato. You see, there are plenty of topics for you to explore! However, consult your instructor first what field you should study. We are sure that you are perfectly able to create a great compare and contrast essay following well-designed outline. Just keep in mind our funny pets and work on your topic!

General Categories of Sexual Harassment Free Essays

As more and more women have entered the workforce in the last several decades, there has been a heightened awareness of the problem of sexual harassment. The recent spate of successful employee litigation in this area, combined with tan extension of an employer†s liability for acts of its supervisors and often its rank-and-file employees, has created an area of serious concern to employers. This is particularly so given the heightened awareness to the issue inherent in the U. It is important for supervisor and manager to be familiar with the laws of sexual harassment. Their knowledge and actions will not only legally bind the company, but may also make themselves personally liable for violation the law. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which enforces federal prohibition against sexual harassment, defines sexual harassment as â€Å"unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.† The California Fair Employment and Housing Commission (FEHC), which enforces state law, further defines sexual harassment to include: Verbal harassment, such as epithets, derogatory comments or slurs; Physical harassment, such as assault or physical interference with movement or work; and Visual harassment, such as derogatory cartoons, drawings or posters. Two General Categories of Sexual Harassment Over the years, the courts have separated sexual harassment into tow main categories: 1. â€Å"Quid pro quo† occurs when a supervisor or manager conditions an employment benefit or continuing employment on the employees acquiescence in the form of sexual behavior. 2. â€Å"Hostile† or â€Å"offensive† work environment sexual harassment. No employment benefits need be lost or gained, and this type of harassment may be engaged in not only by management, but also by coworkers or persons who are not even employed by the employer. An offensive work environment occurs where sexual jokes, suggestive remarks, cartoons, physical interference with movement such as blocking or following, and sexually derogatory comments create an offensive working environment. In determining when conduct is unwelcome, it†s important to determine is whether the victim indicated by his/her conduct that the sexual advance or conduct were unwelcome, not whether any participation was voluntary. The victim†s conduct may be totally passive, such as not laughing at sexual jokes. In determining whether a work environment is hostile, the conduct must be sufficiently severe and pervasive so as to alter the condition of the employee†s employment. Trivial or merely annoying conduct is not enough. A pattern of offensive conduct is generally required also. Unless severe, a single incident or isolated incident of sexual conduct or remarks will not be sufficient to show environmental harassment. Finally, the conduct will be evaluated from the objective viewpoint of a reasonable person facing the same conditions. The victim†s perspective will be used, not community standards or stereotypes of acceptable behavior. In California, an employer is strictly liable for the sexual harassing conduct of managers and supervisors in both the â€Å"quid pro quo† and â€Å"hostile environment† situation on the common law theory that holds an employer liable for injuries committed by employees during the course of their employment. The assumption is made that if the manager/supervisor did it, then the manager/supervisor knew about it, and therefore the company knew about it. The employer is liable for harassment of an employee by a co-worker and possibly even of non-employees, if the employer knew, or should have known, of such conduct and failed to take immediate and appropriate action. Sexual harassment also may occur where employment benefits are granted because of one employee†s submission to a supervisor†s request for sexual favors, but where other employees equally or better qualified to receive the benefits are denied them. If the employer did not know of the conduct, the FEHC will consider that the employer had notice unless the employer can establish that it took reasonable steps to prevent the harassment from occurring. Such reasonable steps may include having a sexual harassment policy in place, as well as providing sexual harassment training to supervisors and managers. Supervisors, managers, and employees must know and follow the company†s policy against sexual harassment. If a violation of company policy is found, a prompt and effective remedy should be provided to the complaining employee and disciplinary action taken against the harasser. The company can only determine whether company policy was violated. Supervisors and mangers should avoid making any statements or conclusions that illegal sexual harassment has taken place. It is the primary cause of death in both developed and developing countries. A report indicates that cancer related problems might increase to more than 50% by the year 2020 (World Health Organization 2008). This disease is very expensive to treat and only patients from developed countries can afford treatment. A report indicates that cancer related problems such as premature death and disability, not including medical bill, cost the world more than one trillion dollars. With increased medical cases, different countries have come up with hospitals specifically designed to take care of cancer related problems. Countries Providing Cancer Treatment United States of America USA has been a leadi ng player in this industry. There are several hospitals in this country that specialize in cancer treatment. University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is the best ranked hospital for cancer treatment (World Health Organization 2008). The hospital is said to have the best facilities for treating cancer and other related complications. Other cancer leading hospitals in this country include Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, John Hopkins Hospital, Mayo clinic and Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center (World Health Organization 2008). There are also more than nine hundred hospitals in this country that deal with cancer related problems (World Health Organization 2008). A pilot research that was carried out showed that cancer care centers received more than 1000 new related cancer problems every year (World Health Organization 2008). The hospitals treat both local and foreign patients, especially from the affluent class in developing countries. Most of these hos pitals are accredited as cancer institutes by commission of cancer in the USA (World Health Organization 2008), having met all the necessary requirements. The hospitals contain modern facilities which are useful in detecting and treating cancer. With the increased number of cancer related problems, the country has continued to face major challenges in meeting the demand of cancer patients. According to the World Health Report 2008, most of the developing countries in Asia, South America and Africa account for more than 60 % of cancer diseases, yet most of these countries do not have facilities which can detect and treat this disease. As a result, most of them travel to the United States in order to receive treatment hence exhausting their facilities. India This is another major player in this sector. It is commonly referred to as the medical tourism country of the world for cancer related problems. The country has various hospitals specializing in offering cancer treatments.Advertis ing We will write a custom report sample on International Expansion Strategy of Australia Cancer Care Hospital. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The hospitals include Apollo cancer hospital, Amala cancer hospital, Dharamshala cancer hospital in Delhi, best cancer hospital India, Bangalore institute of oncology, Gujarat cancer research institute, Kidwai memorial institute of oncology, Sibar cancer hospital and TATA memorial hospital among many others (World Health Organization 2008). According to a research that was carried out in India, it is estimated that there are more than 1.5 million cancer cases reported per annum. This is a very high number compared to the hospitals in this place. Statistics indicate that in India, cancer prevalence is over 2.5 million with over 800000 new reported cases each year. It is estimated that India earns more than 2 billion US $ from medical tourism. The number of patients from abroad is expected to rise this year with an estimate of 15%. This indicates that India is a key player in this sector. Majority of the patients who visit India for treatment come from Great Britain, East Africa, Malaysia and Singapore. Due to the increase in the cost of treatment in developed countries, India has taken this as an advantage to market its sector (Block 2009). Germany Germany is also renowned as a major player in cancer treatment. It said that other cancer clinics from other parts of the world originated from Germany, hence it is highly respected for their high quality services. Another country in Europe that is accredited due to their cancer treatment services is Spain. The country offers alternative cancer treatment that improves body cells. This makes the country a popular destination for cancer related problems (World Health Organization 2008). Clients Of Cancer Services According to a data released by world health organization (W.H.O), it was estimated that 7.6 million people died of cancer in 2005 and the trend is rising (World Health Organisation 2008). The same organisation estimated that in 2015, more than 84 million people will die due to cancer related problems. This indicates that there is need for a serious intervention in order to face this challenge. Cancer related problems were mostly associated with developed countries but this is not the case. A recent report by W.H.O indicates that over 60 % of cancer cases are recorded in less developed countries. Most of these less developed countries cannot afford the cost of cancer treatment. Most of these countries do not have specialized cancer care facilities, hence there is a need to meet this growing demand. Most of the hospitals in less developed countries cannot meet the standards as they do not have enough facilities required in treatment of cancer. This means that most of the patients who can afford have to travel abroad in order to access treatment.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In developed countries, there has also been a sharp increase in cancer related diseases. This has resulted in increase in the demand for cancer care treatment. Hospitals in these countries are not able to meet the growing demand, hence forcing the patients to seek medical help from other countries. Due to this increase in demand for cancer care treatment, there is need for Cancer Care Australia to expand into these regions in order to meet this growing demand. Some of the major consumers are patients from developed countries who cannot afford the cost charged in their hospitals and patients from developing countries who travel abroad to receive treatment. Hospitals providing cancer care treatment have been in the forefront to improve their services through incorporating information technology in their services. Hospitals have been in the forefront purchasing necessary equipments used to detect and treat cancer related issues. Hospitals in this sector have incorporated the element of research in order to improve their treatment. Cancer care hospitals such as University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and John Hopkins are leading in cancer related research. Potential Markets The demand for cancer treatment is on the increase globally. In almost all countries in the globe, there are fewer facilities to meet the demand of cancer patients. However, this challenge is mainly felt in Africa, where there are few hospitals dealing with cancer cases. Those already dealing with such cases are not well equipped. Other regions where there is a potential market for setting up a cancer care hospital include Asia, South America and United Kingdom. Some of these potential countries are discussed below: Kenya, Africa Kenya is a strategic country located at the Eastern part of Africa. The country is a gateway to many countries in East and Central Africa. According to a report released by Kenya cancer association (KENCASA), the number of people dying from cancer is more than that of people dying from malaria and HIV related complications (Kenya Cancer Organisation 2011). According to this report, it is estimated that more than 18000 people die out of cancer related complications in Kenya per annum. Kenyatta national hospital is one of the referral hospitals in Kenya and in the neighboring countries. It attends to more than 4000 patients suffering from cancer related complications annually. The largest hospital in the country used to have only two Radiotherapy machines and only one was operational. This is a clear indication that the hospital cannot meet the growing demand in the country and the surrounding countries. In this hospital, there is a cancer unit with 25 patient’s bed capacity. The country also faces a major challenge in that there are no cancer specialists who can comfortably deal with cancer related cases. Kenya is, therefore, a potential country that Cancer Care Australia can relocate to. There is a ready market from the cancer pati ents in this country and other countries in East and Central Africa. Due to limited facilities in this region, most of the people seek medical attention abroad and it is estimated that a medical trip will cost approximately two million shillings. By setting up a high class cancer care facility in this region people, will be able to save the cost of traveling, hence increase demand. Due to the fact that most of the hospitals in this region do not have the necessary facilities required to treat cancer, relocating to this place will create an alternative to the millions of people seeking medical attention from abroad. In Uganda, a neighboring country to Kenya, it is recorded that cancer kills more people than tuberculosis, HIV AIDS and malaria combined. This is the same case in other neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania, Sudan and Burudi. Setting a good cancer care centre with all modern facilities in Kenya will be able to provide medical services to clients from all these co untries. Asia, Singapore Relocating cancer care to Singapore will meet the growing demand in this part of Asia. According to a report from World Health Organisation, Asia recorded 112 deaths per 100000 people in 2005. The same report indicates that there may be a 45 % increase to 163 per 100000 people by 2030. This indicates that the region will be having the highest number of cancer deaths compared to other regions such as USA and Britain, hence there is need to intervene. Most of the developing countries have limited access to anti cancer drugs, with USA, Britain and Japan absorbing more than 90% of the total supply (Block 2009). Due to the increase in cancer adoption behaviors such as smoking and poor diets, it is expected that the number of people suffering from the disease is going to increase, especially in Asia. This will strain the medical facilities in this country, making it hard for them to meet with the rising demand. Through relocating to Singapore, Cancer care Australi a will enjoy a good market without facing any major competition. Relocating to this area will reduce the burden of traveling to other countries such as India, where facilities are also strained. Most of the countries in Asia do not have medical facilities specializing in cancer treatment and those that are there do not have relevant facilities. Cancer Care Australia, a modern hospital with all facilities, will enjoy a good platform almost as a sole provider of cancer treatment in this part of the globe. Britain This is another potential market for Cancer Care Australia to relocate in. According to world health organization report, Europe has the highest cancer prevalence, with 215 deaths per 100000 people in 2005. The prevalence is expected to rise to 234 deaths per 100000 people in 2030. The disease accounts for more than 20 % of deaths in this region. The report also indicates that there are more than 2.5 million cases of cancer diagnosed every year. Some of the factors associated with this high rate include poor diet, lack of exercises and exposure to some dangerous chemicals in the industries. Setting up a cancer care in this area will be a good alternative to majority of patients seeking help from other countries such as India and USA. Most of the countries in Europe offering these services are very expensive, hence not affordable to majority of the patients. Setting up a cancer care in this place with all modern facilities will meet the growing demand in this area as well as make good profit. Strategic Analysis And Recommendations There is a potential market for cancer related treatment in the three countries: Kenya, Britain and Singapore. However, before deciding on which country to expand to, it is important for the company to consider several things as well as the business environment in the three different countries. Business environment are the factors surrounding a business that influence its performance either positively or negatively (Fernando 20 11). Components of business environment include political, legal, environmental, social, economical and technological environment. (Lucas 2000) Business Environment in Kenya Kenya has been in the forefront in creating a good business environment so as to attract investors from other countries. In order to comply with the legal environment in Kenya, one will need to follow 11 steps before a company is fully registered. Step number one involves registration of legal entity, statistical, and tax registration with the Center for Public Registration, Stamp the memorandum and articles and a statement of the nominal capital, Pay stamp duty at bank, Declaration of compliance (Form 208) is signed before a Commissioner of Oaths /notary public. Step five is File deed and details with the Registrar of Companies at the Attorney General’s Chambers in Nairobi, Register with the Tax Department for a PIN and VAT online, Apply for a business permit, Register with the National Hospital Insuranc e Fund (NHIF), Register for PAYE and the last one is making a company seal after a certificate of incorporation has been issued (World Bank Group 2012). Before commencing its activities, a company should comply with all these steps. Political environment in Kenya has been stable for the past four years after the post election violence that took place in 2008. Kenyan economy is in the rise for the last decade; hence any business in this country is bound to succeed. The country is also advancing technologically; therefore, any business located in this place will be able to embrace technology without incurring high costs of installations. Business Environment in Singapore Singapore is one of the most business friendly countries in Asia. The country presents an enabling business environment that makes it easier to start and sustain a business. When registering a company in Singapore, the first step is name approval by the registrar of companies. Once the name has been approved, the fill ing of incorporation request form is done and approved by the registrar. After the form has been approved by the registrar, the form is signed by the directors and shareholders of the new company. Registration cost in Singapore is approximately $300 (GuideMeSingapore.com 2008). The country is strategically located. Therefore, it is accessible by many people from different parts of the world. The country has continued to enjoy a stable political environment. The economy of this country is also doing well, with a high potential of growth in the near future. For a business to thrive, the social environment is very important. Singapore has one of the most friendly and active labor forces. The country has invested heavily in technology, hence providing a good technical environment to any business. Business Environment in Britain Registering a company in Britain is easy. One needs to follow only seven steps in order for the company to become fully operational. The first step involves comi ng up with a unique name that does not resemble another company’s name. After choosing a name, one is required to fill a memorandum and articles of association form. The forms are then submitted to the registrar of companies. Step number four involves registration for VAT and then PAYE. The company becomes fully registered once you sign up for an employer’s liability insurance form (FindLaw 2008). The political environment is very stable hence no risk involved as you set up your company in this place. The country is highly advanced in technology and with good clear environmental rules to comply with. Recommendations Considering the three potential countries, Britain presents the best business environment. It is easy to start and register a company in Britain than in any of the two countries. However, when comparing the potential market in the three countries, Kenya presents the best opportunity for growth. This is because the hospital will be strategically located in t hat it can serve different countries such as Rwanda, Burudi, Tanzania, Sudan and Uganda. The hospital will also attract patients from other parts of sub Saharan Africa and Southern part of Africa. Setting up the business in Singapore is an ideal place and there is potential for growth though there are many competitors such as India and China. This means that the hospital will face competition from these countries and this may result to high expenses incurred while competing, hence reducing profit. Cancer Care Australia should seek to relocate or expand to Kenya where the cost of doing business is not very high, there is ready market from the surrounding countries, no major competitors hence the hospital will be operating as a monopoly and the workforce in the country is friendly and active. Another advantage of relocating in Kenya is because of the stable political environment hence there is no high risk involved. The political environment is very crucial in determining business gro wth (Nieman and Pretorius 2007) Once Cancer Care, Australia relocates to Kenya, the hospital will make high profits due to the increased number of patients. gender on the internet essays

gender on the internet essays The World Wide Web is notorious for being able to disguise people, places, and things. I logged on to America Online at home through my sisters account. The results and differences I received as a male and a female were exactly what I expected. America Online was one of my favorite pastimes a few summers ago, so I was quite familiar with its setup and the way things happen online. Many aspects of online are nice, but so many of them are unappealing and not worth my time. Online experiences are somewhat the same as experiences in real life. Girls get hit on and boys do not, for the most part. When I am walking down the street, with my roommate, if we walk in front of a frat house we will get hit on; guys will yell out to us. Online females get hit on a great deal more than males, I observed this when I went online as both a male and a female. Online is very different, though, because you cannot see the person you are talking to. Therefore, a person can impersonate anyone they want. This could be a positive outlet for somebody who does not feel like they are accepted, but the Internet is not what many would call a nurturing environment. For example if a teenager is a minority by social class or race they can feel a lot more accepted online because their minority is not seen online. Also if a person thinks they might be homosexual they could talk to other males or females without worry. For the most part the Internet is a place where people can do what they want and say what they want and not suffer any repercussions for their actions. Some of this is liberating, while some of this is oppressive. The liberating part is being able to talk to many different cultures and being able to say what I please. The oppressive part is the fact that anyone can put me down whenever they want, and it does happen. I encountered many different comments as a female and as a male. As a female in the various chat ...

Pros and Cons of Using Lectures as a Teaching Method

Pros and Cons of Using Lectures as a Teaching Method Lecturing is a time-tested instructional method where an instructor who possesses the knowledge on a given topic delivers all relevant information to students verbally. This model dates back to Medieval Ages representing an  oral tradition  in contrast to providing information in print or other media. In fact, the word lecture came into use during the  14th century as a verb, to read or deliver formal discourses. The person presenting the lecture was called a reader because information  in a book was read to students who would then copy the information all down. During a typical lecture, an instructor stands before a class and presents information for the students to learn, but this method of teaching tends to get a bad reputation today. Thanks to the infusion of technology, instructors have the ability to provide a multi-media learning experience, by working to incorporate sound, visuals, activities, and even games into a classroom learning experience, and even provide opportunities for flipped classroom formats.   So, does that mean that lectures no longer have a place in todays teaching landscape? There are a number of factors that can make a lecture successful or unsuccessful. These factors can include the acoustics in the room, the dynamic quality of the lecturer and his ability to hold an audiences attention, the length of lecture, topic and amount of information intended to be shared.   Lecture Pros Lectures are a straightforward way to provide information knowledge to students quickly. In a lecture, instructors have greater control over what is being taught in the classroom because they are the sole source of information. Students who are auditory learners may find that lectures appeal to their learning style. Most college courses are lecture-based, and as a result, many high school teachers imitate this style to prepare their students for the college lecture. Far from being a Medieval way to deliver information, the modern lecture can be very engaging. Many educational institutions now offer faculty recorded lectures for students. Massive Open Online Courses have video lectures available on every subject. There are a number of schools that record teachers in lectures or that use pre-recorded lectures to support flipped classrooms or for remediating students who may have missed materials.  Khan Academy  videos are examples of short lectures on topics students need to review. There are also popular lecture series that have been recorded for general viewing and then used in classrooms. One of the most popular lecture series on  culture  is offered through the non-profit organization  TED Talks  with their series for schools, TED-Ed. The TED Conferences that host  these talks began in 1984 as a means to spread ideas in Technology, Entertainment, and Design. This style of short lectures delivered by dynamic speakers became popular, and there are now hundreds of recorded lectures or talks on the TED website in over 110 languages.   Lecture Cons Students are expected to take notes while listening to a lecture. During a lecture, there is no discussion. The only exchange that may occur between the instructor and students might be a few scattered questions from listeners. Therefore, students who are not auditory learners or have other learning styles  may not be as engaged by lectures. Such students may have a harder time absorbing the material. Students who are weak in note-taking skills may have trouble summarizing or in identifying the main points they should remember from lectures. Some students may find lectures boring; the  length can cause them to lose interest. Because the instructor does all the talking, students may not feel that they are able to ask questions as they arise during lectures. Lectures do not meet the criteria in many teacher evaluation programs, such as in the Marzano or Danielson models. In those evaluation domains that rate classroom instruction, lectures are categorized as teacher-centered. They do not provide the opportunities for students to formulate many questions, initiate topics, or challenge one another’s thinking. There is no evidence of student inquiry or student contributions. During a lecture, there is no grouping for differentiation. The most important reason to reconsider the use of the lecture is that the instructor does not have the immediate opportunity to assess how much students are understanding. There is little to no opportunity for exchanges. Other Considerations Effective lectures need to be well organized and cover only what students can absorb during a given class period. Selectivity and organization are keys to effective lectures. Lectures are also only one tool in a teachers instructional arsenal. As with all the other tools, lectures should only be used when most appropriate. Instruction should be varied from day to day to help reach the greatest number of students. Teachers should help students beef up their  note-taking skills  before they start presenting lectures. Instructors should also help students understand verbal clues and learn methods of organizing and  taking notes. Some schools suggest providing a handout listing key points of the days lecture to help students focus on the major concepts to be covered. Preparatory work should be  conducted before a lecture even begins. These  steps are key to helping students be successful and fully understand the subject and content the teacher hopes to convey. A lecture may be necessary to improve student understanding, but a steady stream of lectures does not allow for an instructor to differentiate for a students needs or assess a students understanding. On balance, lectures should be implemented less often than other instructional strategies.

Artificial Intelligence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Artificial Intelligence - Essay Example The focus in this paper is on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the scientific attempt to build computational models of cognitive processes. It aims to study the computations that make it possible to reason, perceive and act. It differs from psychology because of greater emphasis on computation. In Artificial Intelligence, the aim is to make electronic computer systems to perform tasks that would usually be considered intelligent if done by a human. It is mainly concerned with the analogy between particular computer programs and how they emulate the human mind. The scientific goal of Artificial intelligence is to solve real world problems faced by humans using knowledge and assembled systems. Artificial intelligence requires skills of understanding how knowledge can be represented and the methods of how to use that knowledge. The main aim of AI is to improve human life and reduce risks faced by humans. According to the late pioneer of Artificial Intelligence, Allan Newell, man-made wor ld would be permeated by systems to cushion it from danger. With the advent of new age computers, the dream of smart computers has become a reality. The ‘ability’ of computers keeps growing with changing times. The limitations are virtually boundless. The other main reason is the interest in technological applications in the AI field. These spread out to all disciplines that use any form of computers or electronics to achieve tasks. Examples of these fields include; Medicine, manufacturing, farming, education, housework, research and development and science in general. In business, computers are also very helpful and essential. (Marsland 345). Due to the intelligent and adaptive nature of AI, systems can help locate pertinent information. Discussion Artificial Intelligence computers are commonly known as intelligent systems. This is attributed to their ability to learn from examples and use the statistics or data fed to them to solve problems. Most learning programs are either experience or data oriented. The systems use a knowledge base created with many different aspects to simulate experiences. These experience oriented systems use common sense knowledge to discover how people usually reason about new experiences (Marsland 213). This stimulates a reaction. Data oriented systems create programs to specifically search and mine for data in databases to get exploitable regularities. These intelligent systems can give answers to questions using free text and structured data. AI is becoming more essential to us and yet less conspicuous. The rapid development of this field has helped business people achieve strategic business goals. Challenges The AI field has been incorporated in many industries, and this has brought about their growth. This incorporation is by the development of intelligent agents that are set put to complete the different tasks and requirements needed by the field. This, however, does not come without challenges. Some of the challe nges faced include; the need for information exchange with databases in the mainframe. The need to provide rapid hardware recoveries should failures occurs is a major function of AI that presents many challenges. The need for effective information distribution to all personnel involved in system development is another crucial function that is challenging (Russell & Norving 104). These are some of the problems that should be addressed to achieve successful implementation of an AI system. Some examples of successful implementation are discussed in the following paragraph. Siri is an application developed by the Apple Company, to help users interact better with their mobile phones. It is considered an intelligent agent that acts as a personal assistant and has access to knowledge navigation. The main platform

Reporting and Analyzing Cash Flows Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Reporting and Analyzing Cash Flows - Assignment Example However, the costs of the inventory has increased, which will cause growth of the amortization depreciations (Murphy, 2000). On the other hand, if the equipment is used more effectively, the overall production and operation costs will lower. This non-cash investment is intended to improve the overall performance of the Popowich Inc. Issuing additional shares is the double-end stick. On the one hand, it depreciates the already existing stocks, while on the other hand this will help to improve the company’s positions on the market by attracting investments. Financial activities of the company are mainly associated with the time and money restrictions. Nevertheless, the cash and non-cash investments of the Popowich Inc prevent the company from stagnation. Regardless of the fact that the further financial plans are unknown, if the existing tendency is preserved, the company will shorten the long- and short-term notes that will help to decrease the liabilities. Additionally, the proper capital budgeting will help to control expenditures. As Murphy (2000) emphasizes, the remaining capital expenses are generally graded in accordance with the profitability reported. Hence, the financing activity of the Popowich Inc is based on the capital budgeting model. The long-term liabilities of the company represent the positive tendency, as the company is aimed at shortening these points of the budget. The stockholders’ equities are involved into the strategy of attracting investors. In the light of this fact, it should be stated that the company’s financing activities form the positive

The Changing Face of Education Essay example -- Teaching Education Phi

The Changing Face of Education America has shifted from an agricultural society to an industrial society, and is in the process of transcending into the computer age. Though the progression of technology has made life simpler for the average person in many respects, this convenience does have drawbacks. To illustrate, in the current informational age, much less manual labor is needed. Citizens having a quality education are essential in the workplace. In light of this, schools must make adjustments that help to prepare students with the type of knowledge and skills that will be required of them in today’s job market. Capable and caring teachers are crucial in accomplishing this task. In times past, children were thought of as â€Å"little adults† and were treated as though they should be able to think and act on an adult level, impaired only by the physical limitations of being smaller and weaker. Rousseau was useful in establishing that children are not merely â€Å"smaller adults,† but are special citizens in need of special consideration. I agree with Rousseau in that children’s minds are not mature enough to allow them to think on an adult level, nor have they had the opportunity to experience and learn things that seem very basic to adults. As a future teacher, I identify well with the pragmatic philosophy, which applies democratic methods and encourages problem solving. Rewards of an intrinsic nature have drawn me to the teaching profession. These include imparting knowledge, seeing the students make connections, and making a difference in the lives of many. I am aware of a certain degree of unpredictability in the teaching profession, and I find this aspect appealing. Each day will be unique, with its own set ... ...er enhanced. I plan to get to know my students; to encourage them while using their names, showing them that I recognize and value their individuality. I believe that educational reform is necessary to the effective schools movement. Also, the implementation of technology in the classroom is essential if students and teachers are to keep up with the advances of the world. Not only will exposure to such advances better enable students to function in an increasingly technical society, but also the equipment available may provide for an enhanced, more diverse curriculum. My role as an educator during these reform initiatives is simply to stay current and be informed. I plan to do this by continuing to take classes upon graduation, pursuing a master’s degree. Through various means of professional development, I, as a teacher, will remain a lifelong learner.

McDonald’s and Obesity

Government and influential health advocates around the world stated that their nations’ kids will become as fat as American kids, are cracking down on the marketers they blame for the explosion in childhood obesity. Across the globe, efforts are under way to slow the march of obesity. In the United States roughly 30 percent of American children are overweight or obese. According the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 64. 5 percent of Americans tip the scales as overweight or obese, the highest percentages of fat people of any countries are catching up.The World The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that globally there are now more than 1 billion overweight adults and at least 300 million of those are obese, a 50 percent increase in the number of obese people and there are 200 million children under five who are estimated to be overweight worldwide. In many countries the worst increases in obesity have occurred in young people. About half a million children in Europe are suffering classic middle- aged health problems because they are too far. Obesity among European children has been on the rise over the last 15 years. The number of overweight children in Europe did not change much from 1974-1984; then the rate started to creep up during the next 10 years, and it exploded after 1995. In Britain, one in five children is overweight or obese, in Spain 30 percent, and in Italy, 36 percent. While less than 1 percent of the children in Africa suffer from malnutrition, 3 percent are overweight or obese. Perhaps the most distressing data come from Asia, where the measure of being overweight used in Western countries may underestimate the seriousness of weight-related health problems faced by Asians. In Japan, for example, obesity is defined as a body mass index (bmi) level of 25 or more, not 30 as it is in Western countries. But Japanese health officials report that a BMI of 25 or more is already causing high rates of diabetes . About 290 million children in China are thought to be overweight, and researchers expect that number to double in the next 10 years. The World Health Organization has warned of an escalating global epidemic of overweight and obesity. Global Reaction to Obesity One of the perplexing questions is why the relatively sudden increase of obesity worldwide? Some opine that fast food portion sizes are partly to blame. The average size order of French fries has nearly tripled worlswide. Some people say advertising is to blame, particularly ads aimed at children, such as those ads that use celebrities to market high-calorie foods. According to USA Today, one study found that the average American child sees 10,000 food ads a year, mostly for high-fat or sugary foods and drinks. Traditionally, in developing countries, the poorest people have been the thinnest, a consequence of hard physical labour and the consumption of small amounts of traditional foods. But when these people in poor countries migrate to cities, obesity rates rise fastest among those in the lowest socioeconomic group. Even as food companies’ battle U. S lawsuits and legislators who blame them for inducing childhood obesity, they’re being attacked on another front-Europe-which is threatening, among other things, to ban advertising icons such Tony the Tiger and Ronald McDonald. †I would like to see the industry not advertising directly to children,† said one European health commissioner. â€Å"If this does’nt produce satisfactory results, we will proceed to legislation.†The European Health Commission has called for the food industry to set its own regulations to curb so-called junk-food advertising aimed at the European Union’s 450 million citizens-or face bans similar to the tobacco industry. The ominous comparison to cigarettes is increasingly being made in the United States as well. Commenting on a McDonald’s plan to send Ronald McDonald to schools t o preach about nutrition, an aide to a U. S. senator said, â€Å"No matter what Ronald is doing, they are still using this cartoon character to sell fatty hamburgers to kids.Once upon a time, tobacco companies had joe Camel and they didn’t get it either. † Also under fire is TV advertising of kids’ foods, as calls for curbs or bans rise around the world. â€Å"If the rise in [the] child obesity trend continues, within five years we’ll be in the same situation as America is today,† said a senior child nutritionist at the University of Copenhagen who sits on the board of Denmark’s National Board of Nutritional Science. â€Å"Banning T. V ads that are targeting kids is an important strategy to adopt.†But there is an argument that those measures won’t help. â€Å"In Sweden, Norway and Quebec where food ads are banned from kids’ TV, there’s no evidence that obesity rates have fallen. † A new law in France will f orce food marketers to choose between adding a health message to commercials or paying a 1. 5 percent tax on their ad budgets to fund healthy-eating messages. Other measures under consideration in Europe include banning celebrities and cartoon characters from food ads aimed at children and preventing food marketers from using cell phone jingles to reach kids.Ireland bans celebrities from food and a beverage ad aimed at children and requires confectionery and soft-drink spots broadcast in programs where half the audience is younger than 18 to carry a visual or voice-over warning that snacking on sugary foods and drinks can damage teeth. Ireland is a small market, but there are fears that these measures could spread to the United Kingdom and then to the rest of Europe, especially since many advertisers run the same campaigns in the United Kingdom and Ireland.Unlike France and Ireland, the United Kingdom is trying a more carrot-and-stick approach, encouraging self regulation with legis lation as a last but threatened resort. The U. K. Government published health recommendations giving the food and beverage industries to act more responsibly or face formal legislation. The document followed a high-profile U. K government inquiry into child obesity last year. Marketing and agency executives called to give evidence were grilled publicly over the use of celebrities in ads, inciting kid’s â€Å"pester power† and high salt and sugar content in foods. The paper’s proposals include clamping down on using cartoon characters to appeal to kids in food and beverage ads, potentially dooming brand icons such as Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger. There have also been calls for a ban, like Ireland’s on celebrity endorsement in â€Å"junk-food† advertising . In a country where the biggest grocery-store brand, PepsiCo’s Walkers Crisps, relies on celebrities in its ad campaigns, that’s a big deal. The Nordic countries are the most milita nt about enacting laws to ban or restrict marketing of foods that they consider unhealthy to children, and fighting to extend those restrictions to the rest of Europe. The toughest laws against advertising to children have long been in Scandinavia, where the health risks of obesity and diabetes from high sugar consumption are sometimes compared to tobacco. The legislatures in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark are all considering even tighter controls on marketing sugary foods. Denmark’s National Consumer Council has petitioned the government to ban marketing â€Å"unhealthy food products† to anyone under 16, and Finland’s legislature is hearing from health groups that want a total ban on TV ads for sugar-laden food.Commenting on such proposals, the CEO of the Finish Food and Drink Industries Federation said, â€Å"Implementing stricter controls on advertising food and drinks will not be a quick-fix answer to all these problems. † â€Å"The European Union is on it, Washington is on it, the ball is rolling now and the food companies have to do something,† said one top advertising agency executive. But he added, â€Å"I hope food companies won’t be bullied into doing things that play to the politicians,† nothing there are other contributing factors for obesity, such as low income. He said food marketers could truly contribute to a solution by putting money into programs like the USDA’s Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, a subsidized food and education program that also happens to be very good at driving sales for the products approved for the list. The key is to translate the hype to real solutions like physical education in schools and parents-the most important role models, according to substantiated research-reclaiming responsibility. †If a food has a right to exist, a market has the right to advertise it.†Marketers are struggling against a crackdown on food advertising amid growing c oncern over obesity throughout the world. Marketers are trying to avert a clampdown with greater self-regulation. But despite a slew of individuals company efforts to shift new-product and marketing focus to healthier offerings, the industry has, until now, large shied away from defending itself more broadly.McDonald’s Response For the last few years, McDonald’s has reacted to the obesity issues in several ways in the U. K. and other countries Concerned about consumer reaction to the film Super Size Me, McDonald’s Corp.  broke a U. K campaign called â€Å"Changes† with poster ads that omit the Golden Arches for the first time, replacing them with a question mark in the same typeface and the tagline† McDonald’s. But not as you know it. †Promoting ongoing menu changes, the posters feature items such as a salad, a pile of free-range eggshells, pieces of fruit and cups of cappuccino. The effort preceded a direct-mail campaign to 17 millio n households touting healthier menu items and smaller portion size. McDonald’s aim was to cause people to think differently about McDonald’s and to make the public aware of new products.†There’s no intention to abandon the Arches† but only to focus attention on the â€Å"healthy† additions to the menu. Despite the new campaign, research showed the chain hadn’t received the hoped for awareness for some of the newer items on its menu, including the all white-meat Chicken Selects and the fruit bags. More worrisome, a research study revealed that frequent users didn’t like to admit to friends that they ate at McDonald’s. â€Å"We don’t want to have closet loyalists. † One researcher urged more time for McDonald’s â€Å"Changes† campaign to get traction.â€Å"The market position and market stature of McDonald’s in the U. K. is not nearly as strong as it is in the U. S. and accordingly, you ha ve to stick with the program longer, â€Å" he said. But he warned that the â€Å"Changes† campaign could backfire. â€Å"Trying to suppress the logo is not likely to change the hearts and minds of many fast-food voters in Europe. † In anticipation of the release of the documentary Super Size Me in the United Kingdom, McDonald’s in London went on the defensive with full-page newspaper ads discussing the film. The ads, headlined â€Å"If you haven’t seen the film ‘Super Size Me,’ here’s what you’re missing,† have appeared in the film-review sections of six newspapers to coincide with filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s appearance at the annual Edinburgh film festival. The copy describes it as â€Å"slick and well-made,† and says McDonald’s actually agrees with the â€Å"core argument† of the film-â€Å"If you eat too much and do too little, it’s bad for you. † However, it continues:  "What we don’t agree with is the idea that eating at McDonald’s is bad for you.†The ad highlights some of McDonald’s healthier menu items such as grilled chicken salad and fruit bags. A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said it ran the ads to ensure there was a â€Å"balanced debate† about the film. Super Size Me distributor Tartan Films has retaliated by running identical-looking ads in newspapers promoting the film. As a direct response to government calls for food marketers to promote a more active lifestyle, McDonald’s U. K. launched an ad campaign aimed at kids featuring Ronald McDonald and animated fruit and vegetable characters called Yums.In two-minute singing-and-dancing animated spots, the Yums urge, â€Å"It’s fun when you eat right and stay active. † Even though McDonald’s plans to expand its healthier menu offerings, it does so cautiously, so people remember that the Golden Arches at its core still means burg ers and fries. McDonald’s, throughout Europe and elsewhere, is testing ways to address the obesity issue. In Scandinavia, for example, popular healthy local foods have been added to the McMenu, like cod wrapped in rye bread in Finland. In Norway, some outlets sell a salmon burger wrapped in rye bread. In Sweden, no salt is added to the food served. In Australia, McDonald’s took a different approach-it reduced its budget for ads directed to kids by 50 percent. McDonald’s French operation raised the ire of the parent company when it ran a print ad in a women’s magazine quoting a nutritionist’s suggestion that kids shouldn’t eat at the restaurant more than once a week. While the ad was meant to promote McDonald’s and seems reasonable since the French only visit quick service restaurants every two weeks on average anyway, such a campaign would have been heresy in the United States.McDonald’s can fit into a balanced diet. Later, the company recruited a pair of French nutritionists who declared the Big Mac and cheeseburger healthier than traditional French fare such as quiche. Marketers in France have lobbied hard to be allowed to be allowed to use positive lifestyle messages in ads-like emphasizing the importance of physical exercise and a balanced diet-rather than grim health warnings. France’s Ministry of Health appears to be listening, and is now expected to let marketers choose among three or four positive health messages.Industry experts say the government changed its mind out of fear that strong warnings might backfire, causing anxiety among consumers about eating. Moreover France may hope its new law, if not too extreme, will become a blueprint for Europe. Snack Food Industry Responses Snack food and beverage companies like PepsiCo have joined the fray along with the fast-food industry. PepsiCo’s strategy includes adding products like Walker’s Potato Heads, launched recently in the U nited Kingdom as a healthier snack for children, and encouraging exercise. In October 2004, Walker’s did a pedometer giveaway through its Website, backed by a $ 5. 6 million. TV campaign. â€Å"We want to demonstrate that we are taking a responsible approach and make governments aware of what we are doing. In our view it is entirely wrong to pin all the blame on advertising to children, and we think we have moved to the stage where most government accept this. † In Canada.Where about one-third of children aged 2-11 are overweight, Concerned Children’s Advertisers, a group whose members include Nestle Canada, Coca-Cola, General Mills, Kellogg, and Kraft has just begun running  the first of three 60-second spots featuring â€Å"Health Rock,† a colorful animated figure on a T-shirt, who sings about balancing food and activity. In the Asia/Pacific region, few countries except Australia have yet to make food marketing and childhood obesity an issue. In much o f Asia, a Western fast-food meal or a cola is still an occasional treat rather than a daily overindulgence. As childhood obesity begins to register as a concern in China, though, McDonald’s has started promoting healthier items such as† high calcium fruit yogurt† and chocolate pudding and low-fat milk on in-store marketing materials like tray liners.Marketers are also keeping an eye on Brazil. A Sao Paulo university recently analyzed children’s programming and food that 1 out of 10 minutes of advertising was a food commercial. That study is a starting point for the group appointed within a government health organization’s ad unit to examine nutritional claims in advertising to children. Questions 1. How should McDonald’s respond when ads promoting healthy lifestyles featuring Ronald McDonald are equated with Joe Camel and cigarette ads? Should McDonald’s eliminate Ronald McDonald in its ads?2. Discuss the merits of the law proposed by F rance that would require fasr-food companies either to add a health message to commercials or to pay a 1. 5 percent tax on their ad budgets. Propose a strategy for McDonald’s to pay the tax or add health messages, and defend your recommendation. 3. If there is no evidence that obesity rates fall in those countries that ban food advertising to children, why bother? 4. The broad issue facing McDonald’s U. K. is the current attitude toward rising obesity. The company seems to have tried many different approaches to deal with the problem but the problem persists. List all the problems facing McDonald’s and critique their various approaches to solve the problems. 5. Based on your response to question 4 recommend both a short-range and long-range plan for McDonald’s to implement. 6. Explain with the Indian perspective, giving relevant Statistics about the Obesity Problems with Focus on the Teens indulging in Bulimia and the medical issues relating to Obesity lik e Type 2 Diebetis.

The Social Needs For Students Intellectual Development...

Introduction: Background Generally speaking, universities place emphasis on students’ intellectual development more than their personal growth. Nevertheless, many students experience college life stressful. College students often find themselves feeling isolated as they begin their lives on a university campus (Corey, Corey, Corey, 2014). Therefore, their social needs in addition to their academic needs must be addressed (see Corey, et al., 2014; Ramsay, Jones, Barker, 2007). Developmentally, college age individuals transition from adolescence to young adulthood (Gardiner Kosmitzki, 2010). One of developmental theorists, Erik Erikson (in Lerner, 2002) postulated that young adults’ developmental task is negotiating their identity within the intimate relationship. Furthermore, Cà ´tà © (2006) stressed that reflecting and exploring their lives in adolescence to emerging adulthood helps them obtain what he called identity capital, which refers to â€Å"a repertoire of personal resources† (Cà ´tà ©, 2006, p. 91). It includes both tangible and intangible resources and attributes (Cà ´tà ©, 2006). Lack of engagement or passivity of adolescents and emerging adults result in diffusion (â€Å"apathetic noncommitment† (Cà ´tà ©, 2006, p. 104). Gleaning from these theorists’ observations, college students face developmental tasks, which carry them forward to adulthood. Therefore, their social needs in addition to their academic needs must be addressed (see Corey, et al., 2014). Was the foreign policy of the United States primarily isolationist or expansionist through 1865-1914? At the turn of the century, and after gaining our independence, the United States land mass more than doubled through the use of purchasing, annexing, and war. However, the foreign policy of our government took a predominately isolationist stand. This was a national policy of abstaining from political or economic relations with other countries. General Washington shaped these values by upholding and encouraging the use of these principles by warning to avoid alliances in his farewell speech. After the Civil War, Isolationistic practices grew stronger as the government had to find a way to re-unite the torn nation. President Grover Cleveland pro mised to avoid committing the nation to form any alliances with other countries while also opposed to the acquisition of new land. The climate of post Civil War US prevented us from deep involvement in foreign affairs. Our navy was also weakened by the war. Our natural resources were scarce and our diplomatic relations with other countries had been neglected. With the attention of our government focused solely on our nation, we proceeded to develop our interior. One of the biggest reasons for growth in US land mass was the public idea of Manifest Destiny. Americans believed that it was the destiny of the United States to populate a huge, vast continent. In the 1890s, the Isolationist movement took a back seat and American foreign policy followed heavy Expansionism. Essay on Failed Revolutions and Tyrants in Animal Farm

Failed Revolutions and Tyrants in Animal Farm Animal Farm, by George Orwell was published in 1945, a crucial time in history because of Stalin’s takeover of the Soviet Union and his exploitation of the centralized communist government. This was in direct contradiction to the expected results of the Russian Revolution. Orwell felt that revolutions fail because the end result is a change of tyrants and not of government. Orwell exemplifies this failure through the goals of the revolution and their failure to meet them, the malfunction of Napoleon and Snowball’s rule together, and Napoleon’s disastrous reign. The goals of the Revolution and the failure to meet them, is one way Orwell exemplifies his philosophy. Before the Revolution,†¦show more content†¦Their malfunction as ruling figures is another way Orwell exemplifies his philosophy. Snowball comes across as the more compassionate and charismatic of the two, where as Napoleon is the thinker and has more â€Å"depth of character.† The two compete for power and use propaganda and catchy slogans to gain control of the public majority. Shortly after the Revolution, Snowball comes up with the plan to construct a windmill to make the lives of the inhabitants of Animal Farm easier. Napoleon hides in the shadows per se until the puppies that he has taken and trained are old enough to act as a police force. Once they are old enough, Napoleon has the dogs drive Snowball off the farm. He then takes credit for the idea of the windmill and proceeds to claim that he, not Snowball, won the award at the Battle of Cowshed. Napoleon then informs the animals that Snowball was an enemy and was a threat to Animal Farm. The animals are swayed by his propaganda and are fearful of his police dogs; this is what keeps him in power. Napoleon’s disastrous reign only supports Orwell’s idea that revolutions always fail, tyrants are only replaced, and a new government is never established. Napoleon is a cruel ruler who, fearful of Snowball’s return, executes all the animals who â€Å"confess† to being in league with Snowball. Napoleon uses Squealer as a propaganda spreader to the other animals of the farm. Strategic Direction of Harley Davidson Free Essays

The success of Harley Davidson (HD) is due to the American motorcycle icon’s effective Strategic Management. HD’s vision, mission, goals and objectives strive to exceed the requirements of its main stakeholders. Although these needs are not always met, the company has unique relationships with is stakeholders. We will write a custom essay sample on Strategic Direction of Harley Davidson or any similar topic only for you Order Now The company stays on course with its strategic plan, despite the economy and the decline of American manufacturing and what might be considered its dwindling U. S. consumer base. Stakeholders â€Å"represent very important constituencies or groups of individuals who are part of an organization or associated with an organization.† (Module 01, 2013) HD’s main stakeholders are its employees, customers and shareholders. Each stakeholder has its own motives for being involved with the organization. Normally these motives result in common goals and objectives. Mission An organization’s â€Å"mission is the overachieving goal of a company, the reason why it operates. † (Module 01, 2013). Harley Davidson’s mission statement is â€Å"We ride with our customers and apply this deep connection in every market we serve to create superior value for all of our stakeholders† (Harley Davidson, 2012. p. 2).  This mission statement places the needs of stakeholder foremost in the company’s strategic plan. Vision A company’s vision should â€Å"set up the long term direction of the company (vision), they incorporate the goals of the main stakeholders (shareholders, customers, suppliers, employees), they express the main values of the management to be embraced by employees, and they describe the main goals† (Module 01, 2013). Harley Davidson’s vision is â€Å"We fulfill dreams inspired by the many roads of the world by providing remarkable motorcycles and extraordinary customer experiences. We fuel the passion for freedom in our customers to express their own individuality† (Harley Davidson, 2012, p. 2). Harley’s vision does state a continuing corporate path; however it is on quite romanticized. A look at the company’s goals and objectives is needed to complete a picture of the organizations vision. Goals and Objectives â€Å"Goals and objectives divide the vision into achievable units at department levels for instance, that are further subdivided into smaller and smaller units, until they reach every employee’s desk. † (Module 01, 2013) Harley Davidson’s has identified four major goals in its Annual Statements. These goals include obtaining flexible manufacturing, creating shorter product development times; developing a premium customer experience and fulfilling dreams (Harley Davidson, 2012, p. 4). Goals should meet the SMARTER principle. That is that â€Å"Goals should be designed and worded as much as possible to be specific, measurable, acceptable to those working to achieve the goals, realistic, timely, extending the capabilities of those working to achieve the goals, and rewarding to them, as wellâ€Å" (McNamara, 2011). We will evaluate each goal to measure whether it meets this criterion and the needs of the main stakeholders. Manufacturing. One of HD’s goals is to create flexible manufacturing within its multiple facilities. In the past Harley on produced one bike per plant. If the public demand changed in that area Harley may have been left with a large supply and no demand. Harley’s objective is to enable its plants to be able to produce the right motorcycle for the needed demand in that area. The company’s tactics include incorporating the success of its York plant into all of its plant globally. In 2011, the York plant was outfitted to produce both the Tri Glide and All Touring Softail motorcycles (HARLEY Davidson, 2011, p 4). This will allow the company to move product to the correct customer at the correct time. Employees of Harley are encouraged to provide input and incorporate changes to improve products as well the production process. The goal of flexible manufacturing meets the entire criterion for the SMARTER principle. Both employees and customers benefit if this goal is realized. Product development. Harley’s goal to reduce product development times include three main facets: â€Å"1) a laser focus on the best product opportunities; 2) reduced time-to-market; and 3) increased product development capacity through efficiencies† (Harley Davidson, 2011, p. 4). This goal does not meet the full criterion of the SMARTER principle. The goal is not specific. It does not quantify how much it wants to decrease the timeliness of product development. Employees benefit from this goal. The main benefit is that because HD believes in employees participating in the product development process it has created a learner centric environment. Employees stay well versed in their fields while assisting the company in developing quality products in shorter periods of time. This benefits the customers by providing quality products that keep up with advances in technologies and consumer desires. Retail. â€Å"The goal of this transformation at retail is quite simple: to provide a premium retail experience with every customer, every day and everywhere, while strengthening dealer profitability† (Harley Davidson, 2011, p. 5). Harley Davidson plans to work with all of its stakeholders to ensure that all of its many faces culminate in a great customer experience. This includes an in store and online experience. The SMARTER principle is also not completely met with this goal. The goal is not completely measurable. It is beneficial to all stakeholders. The strengthening of retail keeps employees employed and the improved customers can make customers feel more valued and more likely to seek out the retail experience. Dream fulfillment. â€Å"At the core, these three transformations—in manufacturing, product development and at retail—come down to one thing: we must ensure, in a world of ever-increasing customer expectations, Harley-Davidson continues to fulfill dreams through remarkable motorcycles and extraordinary customer experiences far into the future† (Harley Davidson, 2011, p. 5). All of HD’s improvements end here. The improvement require all stake holder to work together to make the customer experience unique. The improvements, if effective will add to the Harley Davidson ethos. Recommendation My recommendation to Harley executives is to remember to stay true to the brand, but to attempt to market products to find new consumer within the US. Since HD’s inception, Harley has been associated with the freedom of America, but it may be losing it American consumer while changing to a global market. â€Å"Harley-Davidson demographics has long shown its reliance on an overwhelmingly white, male and middle-aged consumer base would ultimately  challenge sales in North America, where it still earns two-thirds of its revenue† (Kelleher, 2013). The goal that I propose is to include marketing to a younger group with a disposable income. I have been introduced to Harley; in fact, I learned to ride on a Buell in a Harley Drivers Edge Safety Course. I an African American female and have never been in the Harley advertising demographic. Harley does have a female rider’s program but it’s not advertised. All of the commercials that I have seen for Harley actual talk about the experience and financing. Although it is an American institution like a lot of older brands, it may lose it appeal a younger population. Increasing its consumer base can only be beneficial to its other stakeholders. It may potentially prevent manufacturing jobs from being transferred outside of the U. S. as Harley seeks consumers in other locations. Harley Davidson’s use of strategic management is in line with the needs of its main stakeholders. The company’s mission acknowledges the need to meet the demands of all stakeholders for a more effective organization. Harley’s vision recognizes what HD brand means to the consumer. The organization’s goals and objectives seek to make the brand more effective in the current global market while satisfying the needs of its stakeholders. HD should be careful that it continues to gain new customers as it reliable customer base ages and are no longer able or willing to ride. Harley has continued to use strategic management to change the company’s fortunes over the years. As a result, the company has faltered but never truly failed.
